Botox for facial aesthetics is one of the injectable treatment options we provide at Shores Dental Spa for patients who want to soften the appearance of targeted expression lines while maintaining natural facial movement. Dr. Tanya Shores brings extensive knowledge of facial anatomy to treatment planning as a Faculty Member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics.

How does it work?

BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) targets one of the underlying causes of frown lines and crow’s feet — the repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over the years. BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily reduces this muscle activity so you’ll begin to notice a visible smoothing of these lines.

For temporary improvement of moderate to severe crow’s feet, your doctor will inject BOTOX® Cosmetic into the muscle surrounding the sides of your eyes — called the orbicularis oculi muscles.

Real results that don’t look “overdone”

BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a technique – sensitive treatment. You should not lose the ability to show expression when you are treated by someone who is licensed, trained, and a medical expert in facial anatomy. It is important to talk to your provider about the results you want from treatment.

Does the treatment hurt?

Some patients report that being injected with BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) feels like a pinch. Your provider may use ice to numb the treatment area. If you are concerned about discomfort, your provider may apply a topical numbing cream before administering your treatment.

How long does treatment take?

The treatment takes approximately 10 minutes and requires minimal downtime or recovery—it’s often called a “lunchtime procedure.”

What were common side effects seen in clinical studies?

Three percent of patients experienced eyelid drooping in the frown lines studies and 1% of patients experienced eyelid swelling in the crow’s feet studies. Other possible side effects include: discomfort or pain at the injection site; headache; and eye problems: double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, and swelling of your eyelids. These are not all of the possible serious side effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic.

Botox for TMJ

Botox may also be discussed for patients experiencing concerns related to TMJ and overactive jaw muscles. At Shores Dental Spa, Dr. Shores’ dental training and experience with head and neck anatomy provide an important perspective when evaluating jaw clenching, bruxism, orofacial discomfort, muscle tension around the jaw, and headaches that may accompany TMJ-related muscle tension.

TMJ-related Botox differs from cosmetic Botox because the treatment goal and injection sites are different. Rather than targeting facial expression lines, therapeutic treatment may involve muscles involved in jaw movement, including the masseter muscles. By reducing excessive muscle activity in selected areas, Botox may help manage symptoms associated with clenching or grinding when it is appropriate for the individual patient.

Dr. Shores has training in injectable therapy for TMJ/orofacial pain and bruxism through her work in facial esthetics and dentistry. Before recommending treatment, we consider the source of the patient’s symptoms, jaw function, muscle activity, and whether Botox fits into a broader dental or TMJ treatment plan.

Anti-Aging Botox Treatments

Some adults begin considering Botox in their late 20s or early 30s, while others start later. We do not base treatment on age alone; facial movement, existing lines, and individual goals help guide whether treatment is appropriate.

Treatment timing is individual. Rather than following a set age, we look at facial movement, existing lines, treatment goals, and the areas a patient would like to address. Botox temporarily reduces activity in targeted muscles, which can soften existing expression lines and may help limit the repeated movement that contributes to those lines becoming more noticeable over time.

Botox can also be part of a broader facial esthetic plan. Depending on the concern, Dr. Shores may discuss whether another option, such as a dermal filler or another facial esthetic treatment, is better suited to restoring volume or addressing a different facial feature.
